A Survey on the Distribution of Non-Specific Subjective Symptoms in Various Occupation


Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the distribution of non-specific subjective symptoms of 9,184 workers using self-filled questionnaires which consisted of 6 items of subjective symptoms concerning general and nervous system, 5 items concerning circulo-respiratory system, and 5 items for digestive system.
The results were as follows;
1. Among male workers, symptoms of the highest relative risk or symptom severity weighted scores (SSWS) in each occupation were as follows;
Welders: weight loss, anxiety, tremor and coughing
Officials in school and governmental office: epistaxis, chest pain, palpitation and diarrhea
Metal processors: headache and abdominal pain
Chemical -processors: short breath
Machinery handlers: nausea and vomiting
Sales and service men: constipation
2. Among female workers, symptoms of the highest relative risk or SSWS in each occupation were as follows;
Vehicle conductresses: weight loss, headache, short¢¥ breath, anorexia, abdominal pain and constipation
Sales and service women: vertigo, coughing and chest pain
Clerical and managers of industry: insomnia, anxiety, tremor, palpitation and diarrhea
Teachers: epistaxis
Cotton and textile workers: nausea and vomiting
3. In all occupations, epistaxis and coughing was complained in significantly higher frequency by men than women but vertigo, headache, anxiety, tremor, short breath, palpitation, chest pain, nausea and vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain and constipation appeared in significantly higher frequency in women.
4. In male workers, the welders showed the highest relative risk or total SSWS in symptoms of general and nervous system, and the officials in school and governmental office showed the highest in symptoms of circulo-respiratory system and digestive system.
Among male workers, the SSWS was the highest in welders, and decreasing order of the officials in school and governmental office and metal processors.
In female workers, the vehicle conductresses and clericals and managers of industry showed the highest relative risk or SSWS in the symptoms of all systems.
Among female workers, The SSWS was the highest in vehicle conductresses and in the order of clerical and managers of industry, teachers, officials in school and governmental office.
